LAI at MIT Offers Unique Focus on Lean Enterprise Transformation

The MIT Lean Advancement Initiative (LAI), formerly known as the Lean Aerospace Initiative, and its educational network (EdNet) enable members to effectively, efficiently, and reliably create value in complex and rapidly changing environments. LAI's engaged scholarship research model is based on members working collaboratively to define key enterprise transformation challenges and then supporting LAI research to address those challenges.

LAI collaboratively engages more than 60 members from industry, government, and academia. LAI offers its members and their suppliers, customers, and partners a unique forum to share strategic challenges and learn from one another. Individual member programs that have implemented LAI tools and methodologies have reported savings of millions of dollars in development, contracting, and test equipment costs.

Launched in 1993, LAI catalyzed a profound enterprise transformation throughout the U.S. aerospace industry. LAI's name change reflects increasing interest from a variety of industries in both the U.S. and abroad. "In response to interest from different sectors, we are expanding our focus to include a range of industries," explains MIT professor and LAI Co-Director Deborah Nightingale. "We believe that LAI's model of research, guided by members and based on real-world challenges, enables our members to successfully transform their enterprises," Nightingale says. "In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, lean enterprise transformation is an invaluable part of an organization's strategic planning and capacity- and capability-building processes."

John Carroll, Sloan professor and LAI Co-Director, adds, "LAI is uniquely able to convene the LAI community to share experiences that expand our collective knowledge base and work toward wider deployment of lean concepts and tools. LAI is committed to developing opportunities to creatively engage both experienced and new members in our work."

LAI works in close collaboration with several MIT engineering departments and the Sloan School of Management and is managed under the Center for Technology, Policy and Industrial Development, an MIT-wide interdisciplinary research center.
